I Scream for Ovaltine

The commercials were everywhere.  Ovaltine for sleep, Ovaltine for nutrition, Ovaltine, that unlike coffee, had no caffeine and was good for kids like me.  Needless to say, there were other things to keep a kid up at night sometimes.  Family fights, riots in 1968 and 1967, no airconditioning available back then.  Short, hot, sleepless nights were not uncommon during the summer, even with fans. Air conditioning was the thing of the rich, movie theaters, and big stores. Nobody had a even as much as a window unit, and even with fans, we ended up staying up late and sleeping in.

I remember being up at 2am talking with my sister who lived right across the way from where we lived, and throwing an iron across the steps while the fan wheezed and buzzed, sometimes blowing air that was not much cooler than the air we got by simply keeping the windows open.

And that was an advance from my barely baby days when my older siblings used to sleep in the park outside the Union Terminal on a blanket.  The old tenement buildings had poor ventilation, and probably poorer quality windows.

Back to Ovaltine. Once more, sheltering in place, I have it again. Wonder if I should bring it out and drink more of it? It doesn’t quite taste the same, and I wondered why until I found out they changed the formula, but still had the original version. I’ll order it soon, and find out…in the mean time, I just will have to feed my CBT Gummy habit…More on that in another post on relaxing during my sheltering in place…
