Fall food-apples, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, chili. Once the calendar turns to October I start thinking about heartier food and memories of cold, damp Octobers where I put on a sweater and as the mornings grew darker, felt cold and damp breezes on my face. And when the light finally arose, the cold was accompanied by low, gray clouds that hugged the horizon and barely lit up the sky.
Of course, due to global weirding, October looks more like September, and there are more sunny and dry days than ever.
What was/is my favorite Fall Food? Caramel apples. Yes, the nuts were hard on the teeth, and the caramel not much better, but still it was a delight to have along with the Halloween Candy and going trick or treating at night.
Back to fall foods. Looking back, my fall foods were largely pot foods-chili, greens, baked sweet potato casserole-anything that could feed a family of 10. I don’t remember if we had casseroles-but it wouldn’t surprise us. There are three things needed here-healthy, hearty, and pretty quick. It would need to be enough for leftovers the next day as well.
